Certified nurse-midwife Catherine Schaefer fell in love with midwifery after attending a home birth while in naturopathic medical school. “Birth usually unfolds in a natural rhythm unique to each woman but can occasionally present unexpected surprises when intervention is needed and appropriate,” she says. She values the opportunity to work with parents as they begin and expand their families. 
Catherine holds a Master of Science in Nursing degree with a focus on midwifery from Oregon Health & Science University as well as a Doctor of Naturopathy degree from National University of Naturopathic Medicine. “My experience and training as both a nurse-midwife and naturopathic physician allows me to be prepared for those situations,” she says. “At the same time, my perspective is always balanced by my trust in the birth process and understanding that whatever is needed can be greeted with respect and awe.” 
All four of Catherine’s children were born at home. With her children grown, Catherine and her husband live on a farm with their three dogs and many animals. She enjoys spending time with her family, including her grandchildren, as well as working with her hands and digging in her flower garden.
