Claire Cecile Pierce Steen, MD

Years of training in competitive gymnastics taught Claire Steen, MD, to value working as a team and paying attention to details. She brings those instincts to her work serving women. “My experience in women's sports had a significant influence on my decision to pursue the field of OB/GYN and the way that I practice,” she says.
Dr. Steen values guiding and empowering women to manage their medical problems, reproductive options and life transitions. “I get to function as a woman's primary care provider, surgeon, and emergency care provider, which is a unique and extremely rewarding aspect of my field,” she explains.
Her interests in public service and biological science brought her to UC Davis for medical school and residency. She is grateful for and humbled by the opportunity to form an important and unique bond with her patients. “The toughness of women will never cease to amaze and inspire me,” she says.
Dr. Steen and her husband have two young children. Having her own experiences with pregnancy, childbirth and parenting have given Dr. Steen a new perspective about caring for her patients. Growing up as the daughter of a veterinarian, she also loves animals and shares her home with a dog and two cats.
When she’s not busy with patients, you’ll find Dr. Steen playing with her kids, doing crafts, reading or enjoying the outdoors — by gardening, hiking, back packing, fishing, or simply sharing her backyard with friends and family.
